The Xmas and New Year holidays ended perfectly with the much anticipated Roverman Productions’ festival of plays.

The annual event once again attracted thousands to the National Theatre to witness an intriguing display of performances set to make theatre lovers fall in love with stage drama all over again.

The five-day program kicked off on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 with WOMEN ON FIRE and ended on Monday, January 2, 2017 with REJECTED.

WOMEN ON FIRE

The drama was set in a typical Ghanaian market. It told the story of an MBA (Master for Business Administration) holder who runs a shop and faces constant attack from fellow traders (for her success) and her ex-husband (for her involvement in an uprise that threatens his job as Mayor).

Theater lovers were glued to their seats through the two hour play that told volumes on society’s expectation for educated women and one’s service to her people.

ONE MILLION POUNDS

A drama for the young at heart, it touched on youthful exuberance and a world where greed rules. It is a story of four talented friends who try to make their country proud whilst struggling to stay true to themselves and their morals.

Two proud Ghanaian professors were invited to a Science Conference in Australia where they were set to be conferred with honors for distinguishing themselves in their field; Mathematics.

Events take an interesting twist when their fates are left in the hands of an old student they taught in the university on arrival at the conference.

The “good for nothing” student unknown to the two was the guest speaker at the conference.

In the midst of all this confusion, a long lost daughter confronted her dad about a statement from the past.

DEAR GOD COMMA

Arguably crowned the best among the five plays, “Dear God Comma” touched on spirituality and the constant battle between humans and the forces of darkness.

It told the story of a couple’s battle to stay protected whilst finding their faith and belief in God and the supernatural.

Audience will not forget the importance of prayers and the need to stay spiritually alert.

Over the years, Ebo Whyte has been known to leave his audience gasping for more and eager for a new production.

It was therefore not a surprise when the last play for the festive season ended with thousands of audience on their feet.

Rejected plots around a married woman who is abandoned by her cheating husband. It tells the ordeal some women go through as a result of societal pressure to marry men without proper counseling.

Speaking to Citi Showbiz, playwright Ebo Whyte expressed satisfaction with the continuous interest by Ghanaians in his production. According to him, attendance was much better compared to other years where the patronage was low.

“Seven years running, this is our most successful and the most patronized. The reaction from the audience and their laughter showed how much they enjoyed the acts. Each play had its own goal and I allowed the audience to relate to it so I never impose.”

“This year, I am going to build on what we have done in the previous years. For the last quarter we hit on the idea of letting the cast come and introduce themselves. So this year we will build on that” he added.

The last production also saw an end to the long standing partnership between Roverman Production and Airtel Ghana and was attended by Ghana’s incoming second lady, Samira Bawumia, wife of incoming vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia, the running mate of president elect Nana Akuffo Addo.

Auditions for the years will kick start third week in January this year.
